A GeoCapabilities approach – dealing with social justice

Members of the GeoCapabilities Project participated in the recent International Geographic Union Commission for Geographic Education (IGU-CGE) conference held in Prague and online.

This presentation from the GeoCapabilities 3 project looks at a social justice framework. Social Justice is described as a set of ideas underpinning the GeoCapabilities 3 project, which are broken down in the presentation into more workable and manageable ideas.

GeoCapabilities 3 has developed tools to support teaching powerful geographical knowledge in more challenging school situations.

An extended GeoCapabilities bibliography

GeoCapabilities has become an important geographical education approach used in many countries around the world. It is directly used in schools and teacher training across Europe, Americas, Asia and Australia with related applied research.

This activity expands knowledge about the benefits and limitations of using the GeoCapabilities approach. The GeoCapabilities 3 project has produced an extended bibliography of published research.

GeoCapabilities 3 presented at EUROGEO 2021

The GeoCapabilities 3 Project was disseminated at the EUROGEO 2021 Conference on April 23rd 2021.  Due to the Covid pandemic the conference was held online, hosted by UNEC, Madrid, the Spanish Open University.

The conference theme Sustainable Development Goals for all, where the SDGs seek to promote a multidimensional model of development capable of guaranteeing sustainability. This involves a complex process of political and economic discussion and environmental concern with different views, which must be addressed from all areas of society.

Luc Zwartjes (University of Ghent) presented developments with GeoCapabilities and social justice. Follow the presentation below.
